Learn about the different E-Bike Classes

There are several different classes of electric bikes, each with its own set of characteristics and regulations.

Class 1 e-bikes, also known as pedelecs, are electric bikes that provide assistance only when the rider is pedaling. The assistance cuts off once the rider reaches a speed of 20 mph. These bikes are relatively lightweight and are often used for commuting or recreational riding.

Class 2 e-bikes, also known as throttle-assisted bikes, are similar to Class 1 e-bikes but also have a throttle that allows the rider to get assistance without pedaling. The assistance on these bikes also cuts off at 20 mph.

Class 3 e-bikes, also known as speed pedelecs, are similar to Class 1 e-bikes but can provide assistance up to a speed of 28 mph. These bikes are often used for longer distance commuting or recreational riding.

In addition to these classes, there are also e-bikes that are designed for off-road use. These bikes, known as Class 1 e-MTBs, are similar to Class 1 e-bikes but are designed to be used on trails and other off-road terrain. They typically have wider tires and a more rugged frame to handle the demands of off-road riding.

Overall, the different classes of electric bikes offer a range of options for riders, depending on their needs and preferences. Class 1 e-bikes are a good choice for riders who want a lightweight option for commuting or recreational riding, while Class 2 e-bikes are a good choice for riders who want the option of using a throttle for assistance. Class 3 e-bikes are a good choice for riders who want to go faster and tackle longer distances, and Class 1 e-MTBs are a good choice for riders who want to take their electric bike off-road.
